Summer Intern Series: Game Design Background

August 4, 2021

Behind the scenes with Game Design

As a a recent graduate of Fitchburg State University where I obtained a bachelors degree in Game Design, I have also spent time taking game design classes at Bristol Community College. Over the years I have obtained knowledge in 3D modeling and texturing in programs such as Zbrush, Blender and Substance Painter; 3D animation in Autodesk Maya; Digital painting and 2D animation in Adobe Photoshop.

While blueprint concepts can be helpful, they are limited in their ability to fully convey a scene. Clients may have a difficult time being able to visualize the blueprints. 3D modeled environmental assets are a great way to create and plan the layout of digital spaces, be it for games, concepting room or exterior building, concepting a product or substituting for not having photos and more! Digital spaces can also be used to create interactable virtual tours/ VR tours of spaces, 3D modeled spaces, and products can also be animated! Overall, 3D modeling is a great way of conveying flat 2 dimensional images into to more visual, simplified 3 dimensional models.

3D Environmental Models and props

These are a few 3D models I worked on. The first is a kitchen scene I put together using assets for an independent project I am working on. The second and third assets listed are used within an older version of the same game. The fourth is a filing cabinet. This assets were modeled in the 3D modeling software Blender and textured with the texturing program substance painter.

3D Character Models

These are Character Models from a few games I have worked on. VR snowball fight simulator: Snowball Showdown, An independent project Midnight Snack and 2 characters from the isometric stealth game Sneaky Clean. In addition to use in various games, 3D characters can be used to concept company outfits, create and animate a mascot, populate a 3D space and more!

Sprites and animations

In addition to character and environment movement, animations are a fun wan to dynamically present visuals such as signs and logos, digital posters and directing viewers and potential clients around websites. The posters above are part of some contract work I did for the company Freedom's way during their anniversary of women's right to vote. I was tasked with animating previously static posters which were later released during the campaign.

The 2 sprites above were created in photoshop for a 2D top down co-op arcade game I worked on called Industrial Evader. The game features John Slick, a corporate spy tasked with leaking the evil corporate plans of Hacksaw Jim. Players can either star as the elusive John Slick or take control of the environment as the notorious Hacksaw Jim and stop John from ruining your fun. Industrial Evader Includes 5 levels, all to which can be immediately transitioned at the will of Hacksaw Jim. Run! Collect! Evade!

Illustrations and Digital paintings

These are a few digital paintings I worked on in Adobe Photoshop. A painting of baby Moses, a Breakfast Turtle, A creature from a game concept I have and some well behaved grapes.

The second type of logo I got the opportunity to work on is the Boston Main streets logo ! So far, the Boston Main streets logo has been the most fun to work with! I felt a lot more freedom and concepts to work with given the different parts, word spacing and the ball icon. It was a great experience getting to sit down and think up different fun ways I could work with the ball and all the letters to have a bit of personality or tell a little story as they dashed across the screen. I ended up with a total of 16 animations for the Boston Main streets logo. here are some of my favorite ones:
